Getting to know Rosanne

Rosanne is a cruiser-style narrowboat (not a barge or longboat, so you can leave the Viking hats at home!).

She is 70 feet long and 7 feet wide. This is the maximum size that will pass through all the locks on the extensive English canal system.

Many locks will however take two narrowboats the size of Rosanne side by side.

Taking Rosanne out with your group may seem a little intimidating so Bromley Youth Trust provide familiarisation days when you can get the feel of the tiller whilst accompanied by an experienced skipper,  before embarking on a cruise with your group.

There is plenty to do, particularly operating locks and mooring temporarily before entering. There are meals to be prepared and the boat to be kept clean and tidy. When the boat is moored there are towpath walks and places to visit.

Canal cruising is fun and there are educational and social benefits to be gained from taking a group of young people away to an environment that’s completely different from what they’re used to every day. The pace of life on the canal is relaxed and a trip on Rosanne allows young people to experience what it is like to live together, to work as a team and be empowered with responsibility.

Rosanne sleeps thirteen in single berths and is ideal for a group of up to 10 people (the minimum age allowed is 8 years old) and three adults. Pillows are provided but you will need to bring your own sleeping bags and pillowcases.

Rosanne is fitted with central heating, a shower and two flush toilets. The galley has a full size gas cooker and fridge. We also provide you with all pans, crockery, cooking utensils and cutlery.  Please bring your own tea towels.

Engine fuel and gas are included in the hire fee. Details of our current hire charges can be found on the pricing page.

Rosanne has a full complement of buoyancy aids, provided in a selection of sizes.

In short, the boat is fully prepared for your trip. You only need to take your personal effects and food.

Narrowboat Rosanne

Rosanne was repainted for the 2014 season. We think you’ll agree she looks very smart.

Narrowboat Rosanne

There’s no shortage of things to do when cruising the canal. When you’ve  not got any locks for a while, you can read a book, walk along the  towpath, prepare the next meal or take time to look at the wildlife. You  get the opportunity to take life at a totally different pace.

Canal Lock

Navigating through locks is one of the basics of travelling the canals.  The level of the canal changes at the lock, going up or down. They may  seem complicated to begin with, but once you have been through one or  two locks, they become easier. Don’t worry if you’ve never skippered a  narrow boat before; book a place on one of our training days and we’ll  show you how it’s done.

Rosanne can sleep thirteen people so is ideal for groups of ten young  people and three adults. There is room for everyone to sit down to eat  at mealtimes.

The dining area can be converted into two beds at night. You will find this area useful for activities outside of mealtimes.

The galley has a full size gas cooker and fridge.

The galley is equipped with a cooker, fridge, sink and food preparation  worktops. You will find all of the crockery and cutlery that you need on  board Rosanne. All we ask is that you advise if there are any breakages  / losses.

We do our best to keep Rosanne in a clean presentable condition. There  is a selection of cleaning materials kept on board. We would ask that  you do the same so that Rosanne is ready for the next person.
